The Little Children

Labels: , ,
"But Jesus called them to him, saying, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.'"  -Luke 18:16

While we were in the Philippines we spent some time with friends in a city south of Manila. One evening we went for a walk around the city and found this Filipino boy following us. Though we acknowledged his presence with a "kamusta" (how are you) and a friendly smile, he would never get very close. He was fascinated enough with white Americans that he wanted to observe us, but fearful enough to keep his distance. I adjusted my camera to the right settings and guessed at the distance for focus. At the right time I spun around, quickly composed the shot, and took his picture. However, before I could release the shutter, the boy leapt back against the wall (the only direction he could go, as there was a river on the opposite side). Whether, he was just trying to get out of the picture so as not to spoil it, or he was simply hiding, I'm not sure. Either way, his actions actually make the photograph much better. It expresses the mix of interest and fear he is feeling; of wanting to connect with us, but afraid of what might happen if he approached us. Aren't we much the same way with each other, and even more, with God.
